Koh Chang and the surrounding islands

- Nicholas Pitt / Getty Images

Nicholas Pitt / Getty Images

Koh Chang, the second largest island in Thailand, along the coast of Trat Province on the east side of the Gulf of Siam. Koh Chang has everything you want in a tropical island - white sand beaches, lots of palm trees and warm clear waters. But at least for now, you do not have large crowds of more popular in Phuket or Koh Samui. That does not mean it is fully developed. There are many places and plenty of streets, restaurants and shops, but also (and everyone on the way).

Getting around Koh Chang

Koh Chang is a large island, so if you want to stay in a beach, you need to understand how to get from one place to another.

Songthaews (covered pickups with seats in the back) cover most of the circumference of the island and serves as public buses. Expect in a regular course, that around 30 baht to pay.

Motorbikes are available for rent on Koh Chang for around 200 euros per day, but be aware that road conditions can be very difficult! Cycling around Koh Chang is not for beginners. There are many accidents per year.

Rental cars and jeeps are in Koh Chang, if you have your own wheels.

Getting to Koh Chang

By plane: Take a direct flight from Bangkok to Trat and transfer to the pier check itself.

Bus: Take a direct bus from Ekkamai and Mo Chit Bus Terminal Bangkok to Trat. The trip is about 5 hours and there are also dozens of private bus companies that make the trip.

By boat: Once in Laem Ngop, take the ferry to Koh Chang. The ride is a little less than an hour and boats frequently leave for the day.

Overnight Stay:

There are more and more hotels, resorts and bungalows on Koh Chang available options every month. Whether you're looking for a cheap bungalow or a luxury hotel, it is on the island.

The surrounding islands:

Just south of Koh Chang are a handful of other islands, most of Koh Mak and Koh Kood (sometimes spelled "Koh Koot" or "Koh Kut"). Koh Kood is among travelers that are known to destinations outside the typical route that does not want to be too far apart. Koh Mak is quick to want an island favorite among those who to see something that just before the world finds out. While the island is accessible by boat from the mainland or from Koh Chang.

Cheap Rooms airports; & # 039 Bangkok

Even if you bargain discount coach ticket are traveling to and from Thailand, you can always sit down for a VIP treatment when you are at the airport. None of these proposals are free, but depending on what your travel circumstances, I might add much value to the trip.

Airport most salons is necessary to have a ticket in business class or high-status on an airline, especially for entry, but Suvarnabhumi Airport in Bangkok there are a number of options unfamiliar to people without (unfortunately none of the Don Muang Airport, but it is a budget airport anyway).

Whether it is worth the extra cost is up to you, but with the recent demand for the airport hours in advance, can in order to minimize the interference by the political situation, you are very early flight can not find anywhere to go. It's good to have a comfortable place to relax, especially if you are ready for a long flight of narrow back.

Meetings payment

Suvarnabhumi has six rooms Business / First separate international terminal, which can be accessed on payment of a reasonable fee class. These fairs are managed by Louis Tavern CIP Lounge and are used by some airlines, as well as the American Express Platinum Priority Pass program offers its users used. They are not as nice as some of the best business-class lounges (and are also much smaller), but offer the same basics - relative privacy, relaxation room, refreshments and showers.

All are open 24 hours, with sofas and comfortable seating, with drinks and snacks, alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages.

The bar is limited but includes beer and wine. There are also bathrooms and private areas for napping. There is also Wi-Fi and TV.

If you adjust the reserve, you will pay 1 000 THB or about $ 32 current exchange rates per person (for a period of two hours, which should be a lot of time when you arrive in front of a flight). If you online and pay in advance, you can get a discount of 15%. Although not cheap, if you consider the cost of a few drinks, you pay a substantial premium for privacy and a comfortable place to relax.

The King Power Airport Lounge

One of the best kept secrets from Suvarnabhumi Airport is the VIP lounge, which provides a very comfortable seating, snacks and alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages. This exhibition is for holders of large free distribution of airport charges, customer cards King Power. The good news is that you or someone else can become a member immediately. The membership fee is 500 THB but immediately a good return THB 500 for duty-free goods, more discounts. And then, access to the exhibition you get, too. There is only one room on the east side of the airport (near Halls A, B, C and D), so I could not make sense, if you are planning on the other side of the airport to be. If you happen to be on this page, it is the most beautiful experience of life almost free from any airport in the region.

Bangkok Airways Lounge

When you get to fly to Bangkok Airways, you have access to their classrooms, whether nationally or internationally from Suvarnabhumi Airport. These rooms offer many of the same amenities as the other - drinks, snacks, comfortable seating, WiFi and TV. But one thing you will not find in Bangkok Airway - alcohol. The two programs are in the lobby on the east side of the airport, where most of its flights from.

Bangkok Airways is an airline quality, so prices are still slightly higher than that of competitors. However, if you happen to be still flying (and for some stretches, which are their only option), then you can also enjoy the convenience.

Flights to Thailand Guide

Nok Air

If an airline rewards for good earning, Nok Air, a candidate would be on the first place. The budget airline, a joint venture with Thai Airways has a theme of birds ("NOK" means bird in Thai) and so all levels are painted as colorful birds, flight attendants wear yellow bird costumes and sell many products themed cute bird on their flights.

In addition to the cuteness factor Nok has several daily flights from Bangkok to the most popular destinations in the country. Maybe it's the birds clumsy suits or simply Thai hospitality, but the staff and the team seem to be always very nice to Nok Air. And while there is certainly a budget responsibly, you can choose the most seats, is free and a bit more (more) best buy seats. Nok Air also allows customers to pay for the flights in an innovative way - you can book your flight on the phone, and then they pay a local ATM (with the reservation code that the clerk will give you). Expand your visa or entry permit is not practical, in fact, is a kind of pain, unless you are very near an office of the Immigration Department. Venues to understand immigration, where they are going. You can not extend to a border crossing.

If you are a tourist visa 60 days and apply to extend by 30 days, or if you have an entry permit stamped 30 days and the application to extend the seven days you have to pay the same price, currently 1,900 baht.

Traveling in Thailand during the high season

How is the weather in the high season?

Season overlaps the coldest season of the country, with temperatures in the 70s and 80s, and there is little rain. Although Thailand can sometimes be overwhelming hot and humid during the high season in most parts of the country (including Bangkok and Phuket), the weather is nice. The days are still sunny and warm enough to enjoy the beaches, but the nights are cool and pleasant, and if you are on tour Bangkok, it is five minutes from sweating! Thailand has a tropical climate with another station of the monsoon, which means that all the time of year you visit, there will may be hot and humid and wet. There are three seasons in Thailand - cool season from November to February, hot season from March to May and rainy (monsoon) By June to October. The heat, humidity and rainfall vary greatly depending on where you are traveling and what time next year.

North

Chiang Mai and the rest of the northern region of Thailand have colder, mild climate throughout the year. In the cold season, the peaks are on average in the low 80s (Fahrenheit), but the lowest average dip down into the 60s and even lower in the mountains, making it the only region in Thailand, in which wants, needs a sweater from!

Hot season temperatures can easily reach the mid-90s or more during the day. There is not much cooler at night either to make, despite the higher elevations in some areas more bearable than in the rest of the country.

The rainy season is less rain than in other parts of the country, but still be monsoon storms dramatic and intense, especially in September, the wettest month of the year.

Bangkok and Central Thailand

Three Seasons Bangkok have all one thing in common - the heat. In fact, the lowest temperature ever recorded was 50 degrees in Bangkok, and that was back in 1951. Fresh seasonal temperatures are usually in the 70s and 80s, so it's not surprising it's such a popular time for is worth a visit.

During the summer expect highs in the 80s and 90s, with a few days in the 100s. If you are in Bangkok during the hot season, be sure to plan all the time. The heat makes it hard, too long, walk away.

A few degrees and storms take an hour or two for most of the rainy cool temperatures, before only, so it's a good time to visit if you want to avoid crowds and do not mind getting a little wet.

The South

The weather in southern Thailand after a slightly different pattern from the rest of the country. Actually, it's not cold season, as temperatures in the range of about 10 degrees between the hottest and coldest months of the year.

The rainy season comes at a different time, depending on whether you are on the western side of the peninsula and in the East. If you live in the West, where Phuket and other destinations in the Andaman coast, the rainy season starts earlier, in April and lasts until October. If you are in the East, where Koh Samui and other destinations in the Gulf Coast are taking place, the rainfall from October to January.

Suppose you are in Thailand and recognizes that, want to stay longer than originally planned as a great place to. If you have that luxury, you still have to make sure that you stay legally in the country for long hours and that could mean extending your visa. The type of visa or Einreises you determine how long you can stay longer in the country.

If you are not already in Thailand hand giving a tourist visa, chances are that you have an entry permit 30 days when it came to crossing the border or airport.

  • If you have an entry permit from 30 days, which can expand up to 7 days.

What you need to know about Thailand & # 039 know; Rainy s ...

Choice RF / Getty Images Steve Smith / Photographer

You can travel to Thailand during the rainy season and it is likely that you have a great time, but cloudy for strong rain and be produced, at worst, potentially serious disturbances travel plans. Although to rain and storms you're used to at home, here in Thailand, the country has devoted a rainy season! That's because most of Thailand and Southeast Asia, moist, almost half of the year between June and October.

How often should it rains and the rain like what?

In Bangkok, Phuket and Chiang Mai it rains very often (almost daily) during the rainy season, but it rarely rains all day.

The storms in this part of the world can be severe, with heavy rain, thunder and lightning a lot. Rains take place usually in the afternoon or evening, but sometimes rain in the morning, too. Even if it is not raining, the sky is often cloudy and the air be very humid.

Frequent floods?

Yes. The floods in Thailand happens every year, but not always in areas that are very popular with tourists. Parts of Bangkok are still suffering at least minor flooding during the rainy season. Southern Thailand experienced very serious flooding, the residents are often displaced from their homes.

What is the monsoon?

The rainy season in Thailand with the wet monsoon season in the region together and often hear people refer to the season and the rainy season of monsoon interchangeable. Although the word conjures up images of heavy monsoon rains, the term refers to a model of seasonal winds, the moisture extracted from the Indian Ocean in Asia, not the wet, which often accompanies it.

Travel is less rain during the season?

Yes. It is certainly cheaper than traveling during the high season and depending on your route, you can save about 50% on fresh seasonal hotel price. You will see even less of other travelers.

If the rains will affect my travel plans?

It was possible. Depending on where you go, the rain will not affect their travel plans at all. But it could also completely ruin your stay. Seasonal floods and severe storms, especially in recent years, major problems not only for tourists but also for those who live in the country are caused. In March 2011, Koh Tao and Koh Pha Ngan were evacuated due to heavy rains (and it was not even in the rainy season). Residents and tourists were transported from an aircraft carrier on the mainland and while this can be a fun adventure in itself, there is nothing that is fun on an island waiting for someone to connect to save you. In October 2011, parts of Thailand has one of the worst flooding in decades. Much of Ayutthaya province was under a lot of water, and although the main attraction of the province, the ruins of the ancient capital, were insensitive, flooded much of the surrounding area and transport routes will also be closed for some time. Even some sections of the main road north of Bangkok have been closed.

Despite these events, thousands of tourists visit Thailand during the rainy season every year, and the vast majority do not rescued at sea or walking in water up to their knees, while objects. If you can be flexible and want to take advantage of lower prices and fewer people, it might be worth the risk. When planning a trip once in a lifetime, or are traveling to Thailand to spend more time on the beach is probably like to come in handy during hot weather or during the cold season. The cold season is not "cool" as the oppressive heat and only in time, the absolute best time to visit Thailand is. While most of the year, the whole country feels sticky and warm during the cold season, it's just nice and comfortable, but still enough to the beaches and the warm islands. If this is important to you, are planning a holiday in Thailand from late November to early February.

It is a place to visit during the rainy season?

Yes. Chief Samui, Koh Pha Ngan and Koh Tao. It will not be completely dry, but is much less rain during the rainy season, as the rest of the country. While Thailand stations are to be uniform, as a rule throughout the country, the archipelago of Samui, in the western part of the Gulf of Thailand, a rainy season from October to January, a little different and more precipitation occurs. So if you want to travel to Thailand from June to October, the islands in the region are a good alternative. Samui is completely dry for the rest of the rainy season in the country, but look clouds, precipitation, and find some moisture. Of course, the islands next to Samui were the scene of some of the worst rains and floods the country unseasonable sometime in 2011 so there are no guarantees when the time comes!

The Savvy travelers & # 039; Guide to Asia ...

Riverain Asia - saechang / Flickr / CC BY-ND 2.0

saechang / Flickr / CC BY-ND 2.0

It is an informal street market, there is a middle-class shopping, a complete dining experience with high-end flow animations. That sums up the new Asian Bangkok shopping district, south of Chinatown, trying to be. If it sounds a bit too ambitious, it is, but do not let that dissuade you to spend an afternoon or evening.

Whether you are looking for souvenirs, back to looking for friends and family to take, a good place for dinner and a show or a goal to go outdoors with views of the city and the river, is really in Asia a great place to . go

It is also served by public transport (river ferry) family accessible and bring to a part of town that is not always perceived by foreigners. And that attracts visitors and locals do not feel like a tourist trap segregation are.

Located on Charoen Krung Road, the oldest street in Bangkok to a restored pier, built in 1900, Asia will evoke powerful images of the cultural history of Thailand. Most shops are designed in large open buildings, massive warehouses that have yet to replicate in parts of Bangkok. There are false railroad cars and even statues of rickshaw drivers and dockworkers lift bags of rice. As critics point out, have Asian developing their idea a little too far, resulting in an "experience" overproduction, the more like a visit to the amusement park with too many purchases that feels a nostalgic look at a fascinating and charming past. All this is true, but in some ways it does not matter, because the problem is has to offer only a showcase for Asia.

What we have to offer is this - is simply a river outdoor shopping with fun shopping, a variety of restaurants and very, very fresh Thai entertainment. There are well-organized market positions in a section, the increase in other luxury stores, patio dishes and many independent restaurants. Many exhibition stands in Asia are the direct transplantation of old Suan Lum Night Market across the street from Lumpini Park. This means cheap fun shoes and clothes, Tourist Home made goods, t-shirts and other souvenirs (many, many elephants), but also high-end clothing by budding local designers, cheap and cheerful metal, random objects, too. There are stalls selling wellness products manufactured locally and even small resorts where you get a massage or a facial treatment can stop and.

As for the food, if you 100 baht or 1,000 baht want dinner is something. As the old adage night market, the main dining room is an open food court with dozens of vendors selling food, especially Thai. If you are looking for something less casual, sit-down restaurants are there is also air conditioning (mostly by local chains, including Pizza Company and some Thai-Japanese restaurants) arms and on the beach promenade, a brewery and a fish restaurant. But you do not need much to the wonderful view of the skyline and the Chao Phraya River in Bangkok to enjoy in the north there is nothing stopping you simply take a walk along the river.

As for entertainment, Asia has two of the most entertaining Thai cultural events. The first, the Puppet Theatre Joe Louis, who lost their homes when the former closed the night market and showing the art of Thai Marionette Puppet Lakorn hoon lek. These artists performed stories from Thai mythology with his dolls and doll difference where the puppeteers are hidden, they are part of the performance here. The show is beautiful and lots of fun for children and their parents.

Asia is also the home of Calypso Cabaret, a Breeders from a long career transvestite shows in Bangkok. If you had hoped to show dressed to Asian songs and classics to see the famous "ladyboys" in Thailand in drag, dance and lip-sync, you're lucky. The shows are great fun, and although a bit pricey at about 1,000 euros per ticket, certainly a unique experience in life.

As a rule, it's hard to go wrong in Asia. Of course it will not win a prize of authenticity, but if you're looking for a fun, interesting place to spend the night, you have enough to eat, shop and be seen place.

How to get there:

Every night 00: reach to Asia or take a taxi to Soi Charoen KrĂŒn 72, or the Skytrain from Saphan Taksin, then hop on a free shuttle to the river ferry in Asia, operating 17: 00-23. There are a few shops and restaurants open during the day, but this is mainly a destination in the afternoon.

Opening times:

Daily 17: 00-23: 00, although some restaurants are open for lunch and some shopping stands not open until late at night.

Plan your holidays in Thailand

Thailand is one of the countries most smoothly to travel to the region, but there are some things to do before the arrival.

Deciding where to visit

Thailand has much to offer to visitors by beautiful mountains to the tropical beaches and islands, from a wealthy capital. Unless you are here for a few weeks or more, you will not see in a position, all the highlights, so make decisions prior to arrival.

Buy or borrow a manual before to examine the stone and make plans some of the underestimated Thailand aims to.

Book

With the large number of carriers and flights available, most people do not make advance bookings for domestic travel in Thailand. If travel times are flexible, you are very popular destinations such as Phuket or Chiang Mai, you should be able to flights not even a day or two before you plan to travel to find day. If you go somewhere with fewer flights than Sukhothai and Chiang Rai Trat, buy your tickets in advance, that the flight not for sale. And if you're traveling to Thailand for a holiday, booking flights to any destination in advance. Please note that tickets more expensive, the longer the reserve. Even airlines, it is not uncommon for half the price to pay if you book several weeks in advance.

Book accommodation

If you already know the general area you want to stay at home, and is very crowded and dense with housing, such as Khao San Road in Bangkok and Patong Beach in Phuket, it's not too hard to go from hotel to hotel to find the one you need you for you.

But keep in mind that these days come without reservations usually do not save money - even a few small inns offer cheaper rates if you book in advance. To conduct research is best capture to stay and book before arrival the environment. Walking around with a backpack in search of a place to sleep sounds funny, but often end up an unhappy experience.

Visit your doctor

Thailand raises some health risks for visitors, but many doctors recommend vaccination against hepatitis B and possibly other drugs and vaccines based on your overall health and the regions you will be visiting.

Know the culture of Thailand

Thailand is like no other place in the world. If you come from North America, Europe, Asia or Africa, the chances Thailand seems very strange and exotic when you arrive. Make the transition a little more comfortable (and a little more of it) reading a bit about the history, religions, and characterize the country.

What you need to know about tsunamis in Thailand

What is a tsunami?

Tsunamis are large waves caused by water usually caused by an earthquake, explosion or other event to move too much water. In the open ocean tsunamis are usually harmless and imperceptible to the human eye. At the start of the tsunami waves are small and big - wave height can be as small as a foot and hundreds of miles long and moving very fast, so they practically unnoticed until the can go reach shallow water near land.

But as the distance between the bottom of the seabed and the water is small, short, fast, big waves in very high waves, powerful washing compressed ashore. Is according to the amount involved in energy, they can reach more than 100 meters high. More information about tsunamis.

The 2004 tsunami

The 2004 tsunami, called the Indian Ocean tsunami in 2004, Indonesia in 2004 Boxing Day tsunami and 2004 was one of the worst natural disasters in history. It was triggered by an undersea earthquake with an estimated magnitude of between 9.1 to 9.3, making it the third most powerful earthquake ever recorded.

The great earthquake tsunami generated more than 230,000 people in Indonesia, Sri Lanka, India and Thailand, killed the displacement of hundreds of thousands of people and caused billions of dollars in property damage.

The impact of the tsunami in Thailand

The tsunami hit the south-west coast of Thailand in the Andaman Sea, causing death and destruction in the northern border with Burma on the southern border with Malaysia.

The most affected areas in terms of loss of life and destruction of property were not only for its location but because it developed in Phang Nga, Phuket and Krabi, the most densely populated areas of the coast and more.

The time of the tsunami, the morning after Christmas, intensifying the loss of human lives in Thailand, to the popular tourist areas hit in the Andaman coast during the holiday season, in the morning when many people still in their homes or hotel rooms. Nearly half abroad were killed at least 5,000 people in Thailand on holiday.

Much of the west coast of Phuket was severely damaged by the tsunami, and most of the houses, hotels, restaurants and other structures with little mass needs major repair or reconstruction. Some areas, including Khao Lak, north of Phuket, Phang Nga, were almost completely destroyed by the waves.

Reconstitution

Although Thailand has suffered great damage during the tsunami, it was compared to most other countries to quickly rebuild. Within two years, almost all the damage had been removed and reconstructed the affected areas. Phuket, Khao Lak and Phi Phi travel these days, and you probably will not see a trace of evidence of the tsunami.

Another tsunami is likely?

The 2004 tsunami was an exceptionally rare event was an earthquake probably the biggest in the region triggered seen in 700 years. Although small earthquake could also trigger tsunamis, if one should occur, you would have to wait for the new systems to detect and warn about tsunamis people enough to be to save the most amount of people.

Tsunami Warning System

The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center, operated by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), with seismic and ocean buoy system to monitor the activity of the tsunami and issue bulletins, watches and warnings of impending tsunamis in the Pacific Basin.

Since no tsunami on the ground immediately after generation (the so long it can take as many hours, depending on the earthquake, the tsunami and the nature of the distance from the earth), if there is a system to quickly analyze data and communicate risk from people on the ground, most will have time to get to a higher level. When analyzing the 2004 tsunami or high-speed data or on the ground warning systems were in place, but since then countries have been working to close this gap.

After the tsunami in 2004 Thailand has created a clearly marked tsunami evacuation system with bell towers along the coast, as well as radio, television and SMS alarm and escape routes in densely populated areas. The warning in April 2012 tsunami was caused by an earthquake in Indonesia an excellent test of the system. Although no massive tsunami ultimately at least in Thailand all areas potentially affected were evacuated quickly. For more information about the production of a tsunami, but be aware that tsunamis are rare events and it is very unlikely that you will experience a journey through time in Thailand.
